One branch of statistics, called Bayesian statistics, is becoming increasingly important in detecting new planets. Emily Sandford, a second-year graduate student with the Cool Worlds Lab at Columbia, explains our new paper and the concept of Bayesian priors, hopefully providing astronomers the tools we need to analyze new discoveries!
