April 1998. A Greyhound bus breaks down outside a one-stoplight town called Orford, New Hampshire. Luna gets off to stretch her legs and meets a woman named Evelyn who is waiting for something that stopped running years ago. The road is empty. The sky is the color of a bad bruise. Evelyn's story comes out in fragments -- a husband who walked into the woods, a set of boots that appeared on the porch each morning, the way the geese stopped flying over the house.
