On February 24, 2023, Brendan Banfield told police he had interrupted a violent home invasion at his Virginia home. His wife, Christine Banfield, was fatally wounded, while supposed intruder Joseph Ryan had been shot dead. But investigators eventually concluded there was no home invasion.

Prosecutors said Banfield and the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, were secretly having an affair and had created a fake FetLife account impersonating Christine. Ryan was lured to the home believing he was meeting a consenting woman, only to become the fall guy in an elaborate double-murder plot.
