On June 20, 2003, the bodies of Shinjiro Matsumoto, his wife Chika, and their two young children were recovered from Hakata Bay in Fukuoka, Japan. Investigators soon uncovered a carefully planned robbery involving three Chinese students: Yang Ning, Wang Liang and Wei Wei.

The men reportedly targeted the Matsumoto family after seeing their Mercedes and assuming they were wealthy. Prosecutors later said they planned from the beginning to eliminate every witness.
