Burnaby Council Saves Michael J. Fox Theatre

Burnaby City Council allocates $300,000 to keep Michael J. Fox Theatre open through 2027, following a successful public campaign. The theatre, connected to Burnaby South Secondary, was at risk of closing to non-school events. The grant covers operating shortfalls for the next two years, providing time for the district to find a long-term solution. Talks are ongoing to revive a nonprofit society to manage the theatre, which could secure arts grants and fundraise. The city wont take full control without owning the building. Meanwhile, Burnaby is building a new Shadbolt Centre Theatre, set to open in 2027.
