Smuggler Pleads Guilty in Deadly Border Crossing

Thirty-five-year-old Timothy Oakes, a dual American-Canadian citizen from Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, pleaded guilty to charges related to eight migrant deaths in the St. Lawrence River in 2023. Oakes, a key figure in a smuggling operation, faces conspiracy, smuggling, and death charges. He drove a Romanian family to the river, leaving them with his brother, who drowned along with the family due to harsh weather conditions. The victims included Florin and Cristina Iordache and their children, as well as an Indian family from Gujarat. Oakes is set for sentencing on September 11th, facing up to life in prison.
