
Uncovering Halifax's Forgotten Graves

Anthropology students at Saint Mary’s University are using ground-penetrating radar to uncover thousands of unmarked graves in Halifaxs oldest cemetery, the Old Burying Ground. The cemetery, established in 1749, holds about 1,200 marked stones, but experts estimate ten to twelve thousand more people lie there without markers. The students findings will help the Nova Scotia Museum and the cemetery foundation plan plaques and paths. Early results show graves stacked at different depths from various eras and old gravel paths hidden under todays walkways. The team plans to create an online portal linking to old photos.
