Nora is thirty-eight, precise, self-contained, and very good at managing her condition. She has had dissociative gaps since she was twenty-six — hours she simply cannot account for — and she has built her entire adult life around systems that compensate for them. When her mother has a stroke, Nora returns to the Derbyshire market town she left twenty years ago and tells herself six weeks is manageable. Then her neighbour mentions a conversation they had yesterday — about Deborah Hale, dead twelve years, Nora's closest friend — that Nora has no memory of. There is mud on her floor mat.
